I. Definition of Temperance
“ 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law” - Galatians 5:22-23.
“He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls” - Proverbs 25:28.
1. The Greek word, egkrateia (eng-krat’-i-ah), is translated as “temperance” in Galatians 5:23 and is defined as “self-control.”
2. Further study of the word means not only self-control, but to be strong, or masterful in self-control.
3. The word “temperance” as used by Paul and Peter was understood by the Greeks of that day to mean controlling one’s passions and desires.
4. The term referred to the purity of someone who masters their desires and passions, particularly sensual appetites or any cravings that appeal to the flesh.
5. Sensual appetites include (but are not limited to) sexual desires.
