WORK # 14: ENVYINGS
Biblical Definition: The Greek word “phthonos” is translated as “envyings” in Galatians 5:21, carrying a meaning of malicious ill-will toward others because of their blessings or advantages.
It’s not just a desire for what others have; it’s a deep-rooted malice that wishes for their downfall, often driven by resentment and a strong sense of injustice. This sets it apart from mere jealousy, which can sometimes be a neutral or even positive emotion that encourages growth, as phthonos always has a negative, destructive connotation.
The Destructive Nature of Envy.
Envy is more than just a fleeting feeling; it represents a persistent, internal attitude of resentment that actively tends to corrupt the soul. This subtle spiritual illness erodes inner peace, stokes discontent, and can lead to destructive actions. Within the body of Christ, envy seriously damages relationships by fostering suspicion, competition, and hostility, thus undermining unity and love, which are essential to the Christian community. It blinds individuals to God's blessings in their own lives and shifts their focus from gratitude and service to bitterness and comparison.
